Report on the 2nd Pan-European Dental Congress (Istanbul, 4-5 of July, 2008)
On 5 of July, 2008 in a central part of very old city with a long history - Istanbul (Turkey) another important historical event in dentistry has ended – the 2nd Pan-European Dental Congress. The important thing that adds thousand points to the 2nd Pan-European Dental Congress is that it was organized and held under the aegis of European Regional Organization of FDI (ERO-FDI). Management of the Congress was carried out by the International Association of Dental Promotion (IADP), Supporting Member of FDI, and European Academy of Education and Promotion (INEP Europe).
More than 1 year has passed since 1st Pan-European Dental Congress that took place in Moscow in April, 2007 and seems that Organizers didn’t waste their time working hard on this project. 2nd Pan-European Dental Congress or just 2nd PEDC grew more serious and bigger comparing to the 1st PEDC. This time Pan-European Dental Congress consisted of 6 Clinical symposiums while 1st PEDC had only 3 symposiums.
The symposiums by the way were of high importance for the dental specialist, the Congress covered almost all dental fields: Periodontology and Conservative Dentistry Symposium, Implantology Symposium, Esthetic Dentistry Symposium, Endodontic Symposium, Prosthetic Dentistry Symposium and Management + E-Learning Symposium.
One big difference with the 1st Pan-European Dental Congress was that 2nd PEDC was organized and held together with the Turkish Dental Association celebrating 100 years anniversary of Dentistry in Turkey on the same days as the 2nd PEDC. As a result 2nd PEDC coincided with Turkish National Dental Congress. But again organizers of the 2nd PEDC realized a brilliant idea and as their present to Turkish Dentists let participants of Turkish Dental Congress attend the Symposiums of the 2nd PEDC free of charge. This idea was highly appreciated by the Turkish Dentists as they were amazed by the level of Speakers at the 2nd PEDC. It was like a “Dream Team” of well known Speakers from all over the world: Dr. George Freedman, Prof. Elmar Reich, Dr. Arthur Goldstein, Dr. Antonio Signore, Dr. Ulf Krueger-Janson, Prof. Jamil Awad Shibli, Dr. Sven Hangert, Dr. Denis Lynch and many other famous doctors and professors. Not every day we can see such professionals under one roof and moreover at one Congress working together.
Each Symposium had its own Partners. We had compared Partners of the 1st PEDC with the Partners of the 2nd PEDC and we noticed that majority of Partners that participated in the 1st PEDC in Moscow remained Partners of the 2nd PEDC in Istanbul and moreover many of them increased their Partnership status to a higher one. This fact really proves that the Pan-European Dental Congress is important for Dental Industry and they are going to support in further in future. Main 6 Partners of the Congress, so called “Platinum Partners” were such world known companies as: “Colgate”, “DMG”, “Bredent Medical”, “NSK”, “3M ESPE” and “Madanes Group”.
Also “Gold Partners” were: “SS White”, “Titanium Fix”, “Heraeus”, “W&H”, “Dentalur”, “Pozitiv” and “Smile-on”.
Silver Partners of the congress were such companies as “Jota”, “Zila pharmaceuticals”, “Turkom-Cera”, “T-Helper”, “Implaza-Hoechst”.
Some of world known companies became Partners of the Congress as well. They are: “R.O.C.S.”, “ViVax”, “CACAN”, “DS Dental”.
The 2nd PEDC was attended by more than 700 dentists. Most of participants were Turkish Dentists but also dentists from neighboring countries also attended the congress as well as European Dentists.
After the Congress we managed to take interviews with some of the Speakers of the Congress and here what Dr. Ulf Krueger-Janson (Germany) told us:
“I want to say thank you for the invitation which was big pleasure to be here at this Congress and to see how high developed dentistry now in Europe is and all of this lecturers and speakers which talk about modern dentistry. And this is a special effect of ERO-FDI which organized this Congress as well as IADP which was a big honor to be in this concluded society and I want again to thank Organizing Committee of the 2nd Pan-European Dental Congress.”
Each symposium had chairpersons. One chairman was from International side and one or two chairmen were from Turkish side. After the Congress on a Special Ceremony each International Chairman and later at the Closing Ceremony of the Congress also President of Turkish Dental Association – Dr. Celal Korkut Yildirim received the most prestigious dental award of International Association of Dental Promotion (IADP) Supporting Member of FDI,– “Order of Candle” for their constant and strong promotion of Dentistry around the World. Words written in Latin language on the Order : “Aliis inserviendo consumor” which means “By burning down myself I am giving lights to others” just exactly match those people who not only treat people but also share their knowledge with others.
So making a short resume of the 2nd Pan-European Dental Congress we can without any doubts say that this was a big success and finally seems like Europe will now have its own Regional International Congress like Asia-Pacific Dental Congress, Latin American Dental Congress and others.
At the Joint Closing Ceremony of both Congresses in front of honored guests – President-Elect of FDI Dr. Roberto Viana and President of ERO-FDI Dr. Patrick Hescot and in front of thousand dentists in the hall, Chairman of International Organizing Committee of the Pan-European Dental Congress Dr. Vladimir Sadovski has announced that 3rd Pan-European Dental Congress will take place in Kiev (Ukraine) in December, 2009. Scientific Chairman of 2ndPEDC Prof. Alex Mersel (Israel) passed the baton of the Pan-European Dental Congress to the President of Ukrainian Dental Association Prof. K. Kosenko .“Welcome to Kiev!” sounded as an echo in a big hall of Closing Ceremony.
